Passengers on the boat were Thai Muslims traveling to an Islamic religious ceremony, the Associated Pressreported.
Harbor Department official Surasak Sansombat said the boat’s listed capacity was 50 passengers, and that it likely capsized from the passenger overload and a strong current in the river, according to the AP.
Rescue efforts for victims of the accident continued Sunday.
