Gunman Kills One and Injures Five, Including 2 Officers, in Philadelphia

A gunman killed one person and injured five others in a shooting spree in Philadelphia on Friday night that began when he ambushed a police sergeant in her squad car.

Other law enforcement officers responding to the shooting chased a suspect on foot and cornered him in an alley where he was shot and killed.

The violence began around 11:20 p.m. when the gunman approached police Sgt. Sylvia Young, who was seated in her parked vehicle in West Philadelphia, officials said. Saying nothing, the man began firing into her window, Police Commissioner Richard Ross Jr. told reporters at a news conference on Saturday.

Sergeant Young, a 19-year police veteran, survived after leaning into her passenger seat to shield herself from the gunfire, he said. She was shot at least eight times, some of the bullets hitting her left arm and a protective vest she was wearing.

The police had not released the name of the slain suspect as of midday Saturday.

During the chase, the gunman fired into the open door of a bar, where he shot a security guard in the left leg. He then grabbed a nearby woman and used her as a human shield before shooting her in the leg as well, the officials said.

As he fled, the gunman fired multiple rounds into a white car, striking a man and a woman. The woman died and the man was in critical condition,The Associated Press reported, citing Commissioner Ross.

The gunman ran into an alley, where he was pursued by a University of Pennsylvania police officer and two Philadelphia police officers. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, he was fatally shot and the university officer, a former city police officer himself, was wounded, The A.P. reported.
